How to know if someone blocked you on Instagram

Instagram doesn’t tell you: people aren’t notified when they’re blocked. A block leaves signs instead. Your likes and comments disappear from their photos and videos, you can’t mention or tag them, and messages you send them aren’t delivered. A deactivated profile or a changed username can look similar, so look for more than one sign.

Signs that someone blocked you

  • Your likes and comments on their photos and videos are gone. A block removes them, and unblocking doesn’t bring them back.
  • You can’t mention their username or tag them.
  • Messages you send them aren’t delivered, and they won’t arrive later even if you’re unblocked.
  • You can’t join a room they create.

What else can look like a block

  • They deactivated their profile: its photos, comments and likes are hidden until they log back in.
  • Their username changed, for example after the account was compromised, so searching the old one finds nothing.
  • Instagram made the account harder to find in search and Explore for going against its Recommendation guidelines. Searching its exact username may still find it.

What a block does on their side

Instagram lets the person blocking choose to block only your account, or your account and any other accounts you have or create. Your conversation stays in their inbox, but they can’t message you. If you’re both in a group chat, they choose whether to stay, and if they stay, you both still see each other’s messages in the group.

Common questions

Does Instagram notify you when someone blocks you?

No. Instagram says people aren’t notified when they’re blocked.

Can you message someone who blocked you on Instagram?

You can send a message, but it isn’t delivered, and it won’t be delivered later if they unblock you.

What happens to your comments when someone blocks you?

Your likes and comments are removed from their photos and videos, and unblocking you doesn’t restore them.

Can you still see the comments of someone who blocked you?

Yes, on posts shared by public accounts or accounts you follow: a block doesn’t hide their likes and comments there.
