How to calculate engagement rate
- Add up the likes, comments, shares and saves on the posts you want to measure.
- For the rate by followers, divide by the number of posts, then by the account’s followers, and multiply by 100.
- For the rate by views, divide by the posts’ total views and multiply by 100.
- Leave out any count a platform doesn’t show you, and compare accounts using the same counts.
By followers or by views?
The rate by followers shows how much of an audience responds to an average post, so it compares accounts of any size on the same footing. It is the usual measure for comparing creators before working with one.
The rate by views measures each post against the people who actually saw it. Where posts reach far beyond an account’s followers, as on TikTok and Reels, it is often the fairer measure.
What counts as engagement
This calculator counts likes, comments, shares and saves. Views are used only for the rate by views; they are not an interaction themselves.

How do you calculate engagement rate?
Add up likes, comments, shares and saves. Divide by the number of posts and then by followers for the rate by followers, or by total views for the rate by views, and multiply by 100.
Is engagement rate by followers or by views better?
By followers compares accounts of different sizes; by views compares posts with the audience that actually saw them. Use the one that matches your question, and the same one for every account you compare.
