How to calculate Instagram engagement rate
- Note the likes and comments on each post you want to measure, plus shares and saves where you can see them.
- Add them up and divide by the number of posts.
- Divide by the account’s followers and multiply by 100.
- For Reels, divide the total by their views instead for the rate by views.
Your account or someone else’s
On your own posts you can see shares and saves as well as likes and comments, so the rate can count all four. On someone else’s you usually see likes and comments only. When you compare accounts, count the same things for each.
Posts or Reels
For photo and carousel posts, the rate by followers is the usual measure. Reels reach people who don’t follow the account, so for them the rate by views compares each Reel with the audience that saw it.

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?
Add up the likes, comments, shares and saves on the posts, divide by the number of posts and by the account’s followers, and multiply by 100.
Should I count saves and shares?
Count them when you can see them, as on your own posts. When you compare accounts, use the same counts for each: on other people’s posts that usually means likes and comments.
