Does Instagram notify when you screenshot?
Only in vanish mode. Instagram’s Help Center describes one screenshot alert: in a vanish mode chat, you’re notified if Instagram detects that the other person took a screenshot. It describes none for stories, posts, Reels or profiles. Disappearing photos and videos sent in a chat can’t be screenshotted at all.
Where Instagram tells someone about a screenshot
| You screenshot | What Instagram does |
|---|---|
| A message in a vanish mode chat | Notifies them, if it detects the screenshot |
| A disappearing photo or video in a chat | Doesn’t allow the screenshot |
| A story | No alert in the Help Center |
| A post or Reel | No alert in the Help Center |
| A profile | No alert in the Help Center |
Screenshots in vanish mode
Vanish mode sends messages, photos and videos that disappear when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off. Instagram warns that the other person can still take a screenshot or screen recording before a message disappears, and you’ll get a notification if it detects a screenshot. They could also photograph the screen with another device.
- Tap Messages at the bottom.
- Tap a chat.
- Swipe up to turn vanish mode on, and swipe up again to turn it off.

Disappearing photos and videos
A disappearing photo or video sent in a chat can’t be screenshotted: Instagram says taking a screenshot is now disabled for them. The sender can still see whether it was seen: open the conversation in Messages, and the status shows below it.

Stories, posts and Reels
The Help Center describes no screenshot alert for stories, posts or Reels. To limit who can save your Reels another way, a private account turns off downloading and remixing: on a private account, no one can download or remix your Reels.
