How to mute someone on Instagram

Go to their profile, tap Following, then Mute, and turn on Posts, Stories or both. Instagram won’t let them know. Muting hides their posts from your feed and their stories from the top of it while you keep following them, and you can mute their messages from your chat with them.

Mute their posts and stories

  1. Go to their profile: tap their username on one of their posts or stories, or search for it.
  2. Tap Following below their profile info.
  3. Tap Mute.
  4. Turn on Posts, Stories or both.

From your feed, you can also tap Options next to one of their posts, then Hide, then Mute and their username, and choose Mute posts or Mute posts and story.

Mute only their stories

  1. At the top of your feed, tap and hold their profile picture.
  2. Tap Mute, then Mute stories.

Their story leaves the top of your feed, but you still see their posts and the notes they share.

Mute their messages

  1. Tap Messages at the bottom.
  2. Open your chat with them.
  3. Tap their name at the top of the chat, then Mute.
  4. Turn on Mute messages, Mute calls or both.

Unmute someone

  • Posts and stories: go to their profile, tap Following, then Mute, and turn off Posts or Stories.
  • Stories muted from your feed: open their story from their profile picture, tap Options in the top right, then Unmute story.
  • Messages: open your chat with them, tap their name, then Mute, and turn off Mute messages or Mute calls.

What muting does and doesn’t do

  • Instagram won’t let them know you muted them.
  • You keep following them: muting is different from unfollowing.
  • It doesn’t hide the notes they share. Instagram has a separate way to mute notes.
