How to unarchive a story on Instagram
Instagram’s Help Center describes no way to unarchive a story: an archived story stays in your Stories archive, where only you can see it, until you share it. To bring it back, open it from your archive and share it to your story again, or add it to a highlight so it stays on your profile. Archived posts are different: Show on profile puts one back in its original spot.
Find your archived stories
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below How you use Instagram, tap Your activity, then Archived.
- Tap Stories archive at the top to switch between the Stories, Posts and Live archives.
Archived stories can’t be seen on Instagram unless you share them. Instagram notes that archived stories you shared publicly are used to improve AI at Meta unless you delete them or make your account private.
Share an archived story again
Open the story in your Stories archive and share it to your story again. Anything Instagram changed when it saved the story to your archive stays changed: a photo story with a music sticker, for example, keeps the sticker but no longer plays the music.

Keep it on your profile as a highlight
- Go to your profile and tap New. If you can’t see New, tap Story highlight.
- Select the story or stories to add, then tap Next.
- Tap Edit cover to choose a cover and a name, then tap Add.
A highlight stays on your profile until you remove it, and the people you’ve allowed to see your story can see it.
